JAGUAR
The Jaguar (Panthera Onca) is the largest cat native to the Americas and the third largest in the world, exceeded in size by the tiger and the lion.
Habitat
Typically found in tropical rainforests but also live in savannas and grasslands.
Range
Extends from the southwestern United States and Mexico in North America, across much of Central America, and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina in South America.
Life Span
Estimated at 12-15 years
Conservation Status: Endangered
The jaguar enjoys swimming and is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food chain. As a keystone species it plays an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating prey populations.
They have lost 40% of their historical range. While they used to live in the US, there has not been evidence of a breeding jaguar population in the last 50 years. The biggest threats to Jaguars are habitat fragmentation, deforestation and poaching.
